You unlock your cellphone and click your Contacts List. It doesn't take you very long to find your mother's name. You choose to call your mother because if they were in the car you know that it is your father that always drives.
On the third ring she picks up, "Hello, Ann."
her mom's voice is so light and soothing, that you want her to continue takling before you ruin her with the terrible news that you hold on your shoulders. "Something's happened..." Your voice is scratchy and you try to swallow the lump in your throat.
"What happened? Are you alright? Ann? How's Andy?" your mother lets her maternal instincts kick in.
"It's Andy," you gasp, unable to get anything else out.
You here your mother talking to your father. There were some loud car noises and then your mother's voice once again. "Honey, calm down. We'll be there soon! Just keep Andy and yourself safe!"
"Mom!" you yell into the phone.
"It's too late!" you sob. "I let him play outside and there was a truck, and--"
"Ann, stop. We're turning onto our road. I see the house."
She hung up and you drop the phone and run back to the body. There car pulls up and before its even fully stopped, your mother jumps out of the passenger seat. she drops to her knees and grabbs his head.
"My baby!" your mother cries, your father gets out.
"What happened?" Your father asks at the same time your mother says, "He's dead." Her words are so accusing that you flinch.
"It's not my fault--"
"Well if you had been watching him." your father booms.
The pain of the accident and the pressure their harsh voices added was too much for you. So you explode.
"You know what!? you weren't there! You didn't see him die!"
You turn on your heal and run.
